Greetings! We recently returned from a day trip to Liechtenstein (country #81). Below, you will find information and photos from our trip.

Liechtenstein (lick-ten-styne) is a landlocked country, surrounded by Switzerland (west and south) and Austria (east and north). It is the fourth smallest country in Europe, and is 160sq km/62sq mi, with a population of just over 38,700 people.

We did a self-guided tour, and there were informational tiles leading up to the castle that outlined the history of Liechtenstein, some of which are presented here.

Interesting Fact: The only other doubly landlocked country in the world is Uzbekistan

Liechtenstein has a strong GDP, and while it is not a member of the European Union (EU), it is a member of the United Nations, European Free Trade Association, and Council of Europe, and participates in the Schengen Area and European Economic Area. Liechtenstein also has a strong collaboration with Switzerland’s customs and money (e.g., the official language is Swiss-German, and the Swiss Franc is the unit of money used in Liechtenstein).

Liechtenstein is a fascinating principality that is worth visiting for a day (it’s a 2-hour train ride from Zurich to Sargans, followed by a 30-minute bus ride to Vaduz). It was somewhat magical to see it in the wintertime, and it would also be nice to see it in the summer, which may be a future trip idea. Until next time, take care and be well…
